We met with Steven Brown (Founder and CEO) and Chris Tradgett (Strategy Advisor) from Moonpull to discuss the affiliate best practices to futureproof your revenue streams.
Ensuring your revenue streams are secure and your campaigns are accurately tracked is essential to building confidence in your affiliate programme. With privacy regulations evolving and tracking technology becoming increasingly complex, Commission Factory, in partnership with Awin, offers comprehensive tracking solutions designed to meet these challenges head-on. Validated by Moonpull's expert data insights, these solutions provide the transparency and reliability needed to drive your program's success.
In this exclusive Q&A, we spoke with Steven and Chris to explore the latest affiliate tracking challenges, actionable best practices, and strategies to safeguard your revenue in an ever-changing digital landscape.
1. To start, can you tell us a bit about Moonpull and the role you play in the affiliate marketing space?
Steven: "Absolutely, so Moonpull specialises in auditing and optimising affiliate tracking. Our technology evaluates tracking systems to identify gaps, inefficiencies, or inconsistencies - providing networks, agencies, advertisers, and publishers with actionable insights. By ensuring accurate and compliant tracking, we help safeguard revenue and build trust, even as the landscape evolves."
2. The affiliate marketing industry is facing increasing pressure with Personally Identifiable Information (PII) regulations and tracking challenges. How critical is it to address these issues now?
Chris: "It’s essential. Changes like Australia’s upcoming PII Act and Google’s unknown approach to phasing out/the deprecation of third-party cookies are reshaping how tracking operates. Companies that operate in the affiliate space (so networks, advertisers, agencies, and publishers) that don’t adapt risk significant revenue losses—sometimes in excess of 20%—due to attribution gaps. Acting now not only protects revenue but also provides transparency across the ecosystem. Adam Ross’ recent Q&A with Yazmeen Hussain (Awin CEO with Head of Product Marketing) suggests losses due to tracking components missing can be in excess of 30%."
3. How would Moonpull’s partnership with Commission Factory and Awin help address these challenges to users on the network?
Steve: "Our collaboration ensures a transparent and proactive approach to tracking. By conducting regular audits and leveraging our tracking optimisation tools, we help identify and resolve potential issues before they impact revenue. Together, we’re improving attribution accuracy and providing a safety net for publishers and advertisers navigating these changes. Commission Factory can follow Awin in using Moonpull for scheduled checking, utilising Moonpull’s data in enhancing knowledge when publishers raise queries and in ensuring new programs are set up correctly too."
4. Transparency has never been more vital in today’s landscape. How does Moonpull ensure compliance and foster trust?
Steve: "Transparency is at the core of our operations. We provide detailed insights into tracking performance, which helps networks like Commission Factory and Awin offer clarity to their partners. Additionally, we maintain certifications that are renewed monthly, ensuring compliance with the latest regulations and building confidence across the board."
"Moonpull is an at-scale auditing tool that reviews how user consent controls and interacts with affiliate tracking. All businesses, but especially advertisers, should be forming their own view on legislative compliance, and this is guided by regulators in many cases. Therefore, advertisers often reach the same conclusion. Moonpull data allows networks (and others like publishers) to see whether sales are going untracked due to compliance reasons and therefore allow a dialogue to develop ensuring publishers are fairly rewarded and advertisers fairly charged."
5. Tracking technology is always evolving but what innovations are Moonpull exploring to stay ahead of the curve?
Chris: "We’ve actually developed our own language that our clients now use around tracking. Crucially to track beyond the session – and within sessions for most advertisers, a cookie or similar – the ‘memory cookie’ – is needed. For advertisers where users are logged in it can be a little different. Moonpull helps networks work with their advertisers to explain that there are many methods to achieve a memory cookie being set, including third-party cookies (for now), server-to-server set cookies, and JavaScript-set cookies. The aim is to have a memory of the referral at the checkout; and when it’s viewed like this, it illustrates why tracking by a voucher code being used by the user at the checkout can be a viable method in some cases."
6. What does the future of affiliate tracking look like, and how is Moonpull helping to shape it?
Chris: "Wow, put me on the spot! The European scene is perhaps being led to look at the future more closely than elsewhere due to the most relevant ‘cookie laws’ relating to the setting of cookies that often render the question of whether the methods need to adhere to PII legislation secondary. So, the future addresses how every sale down the channel is recognised even if it’s not immediately tracked in an environment where every effort is made to track every transaction. This will mean the requirements of different advertisers – potentially with different publishers – to get more tracking methods in play. For instance, a food delivery app with lots of logged-in, repeat customers should make sure they have great app tracking, especially given their users will be known at the start of most journeys."
"Through our partnership with Commission Factory and Awin, we’re paving the way for a more secure and transparent affiliate ecosystem that’s ready to thrive in this dynamic environment."
